How to Keep Your Beard Looking Great Between Barber Visits

A great beard doesn’t happen by accident, it’s a mix of expert barbershop shaping and solid everyday care. At Wilds, we can keep your beard razor-sharp in the chair, but what you do between appointments makes all the difference. Here’s how to keep your beard looking tidy, healthy and sharp long after you’ve left the shop.
1. Wash Your Beard (But Not Too Much)
Your beard needs cleaning, but it doesn’t love being stripped of natural oils.
Wash it 2–3 times a week with a beard-specific shampoo or wash. This keeps things fresh without drying out the skin underneath.
Quick tip: If you work outdoors, hit the gym, or just feel extra grimy one day, rinsing with warm water is enough.
2. Keep It Conditioned & Soft
A soft beard not only looks better, it’s more comfortable, too.
Use beard oil daily to stop dryness and itchiness.
Add beard balm or butter if your beard is longer or prone to frizz.
Work products right down to the skin to keep everything hydrated.
Result: a smoother beard, fewer tangles, and a healthier shine.
3. Brush or Comb It Every Day
Brushing helps train your beard to grow in the right direction and distributes oils evenly.
A boar bristle brush is ideal for shorter beards.
A wide-tooth comb works best for longer or curly beards.
Daily brushing reduces knots, boosts volume, and gives your beard a tidy shape.
4. Trim Those Strays Between Appointments
You don’t need to reshape your beard at home, that’s our job.
But between visits, feel free to:
Snip any obvious flyaways
Tidy the moustache line above your lip
Lightly clean up the cheek line if it’s growing wild
Just avoid taking big chunks off or trying to reshape your beard at home. It’s easy to accidentally go too far!
If in doubt, leave it we’ll sort it.
5. Don’t Forget the Skin Underneath
Healthy beard = healthy skin underneath.
Exfoliate gently once or twice a week
Moisturise daily
Use products designed for sensitive skin if you’re prone to irritation
Good skincare helps prevent beard dandruff (“beardruff”) and keeps everything looking fresh.
6. Keep Your Neckline Fresh
The neckline is usually the first area to lose its crisp shape.
A simple guide for trimming it at home:
Imagine a curved line from just behind each ear, dipping above the Adam’s apple.
Don’t take it too high, that can make your beard look shorter or oddly shaped.
If you’d rather not touch it, book a quick tidy. We’re always happy to help.
7. Stay on Top of Your Appointments
Every beard has a maintenance rhythm. For most people, a tidy-up every 2–4 weeks keeps the shape strong.
At Wilds, we’ll recommend the best schedule based on your style, growth pattern, and hair type.
Booking in advance is the easiest way to keep your beard looking its best.
